There be only two facraments ordained by Christ our Lord in the gospel, that is to say, baptifm and the supper of the Lord: neither of which may be dispensed by any but by a minister of the word lawfully ordained k. V. The facraments of the Old Testament, in regard of the spiritual things thereby signified and exhibited, were, for substance, the fame with those of the New /. B CHAP. XXVIII. Of Baptifm. APTISM is a facrament of the New Testament, ordained by Jesus Christa, not only for the folemn admiffion whereunto, even baptifm, doth also now fave us, (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the aniwer of a good confcience towards God) by the refurrection of. Jefus Chrift. b Mat. iii. 11. I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance; but he that cometh after me, is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the holy Ghost, and with fire. 1 Cor. xii. 13. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. i Mat. xxvi. 27, 28. When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord's fupper. v. 23. Let a man fo account of us, as of the minifters of Chrift, and stewards of the mysteries of God. Heb. v. 4. And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron. Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; v. 2. and were all baptized unto Mofes in the cloud, and in the fea; v. 3. and did all eat the same spiritual meat; v. 4. and did all drink the fame fpiritual drink; (for they drank of that fpiritual Rock that followed them; and that Rock was Chrift.) For as many of you as have been baptized into Chrift, have put on Christ. Rom. vi. 5. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death; we shall be also in the likeness of his refur rection. Tit. iii. 5. Not by works of righ III. Dip teousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he faved us by the wathing of regeneration, and renewing of the holy Ghost. f Marki. 4. The refore we are buried with him by baptifm into death; that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even fo we also should walk in newness of life. b Mat. xxviii. 19. Dipping of the person into the water is not necessary, but baptifm is rightly administred by pouring or sprinkling water upon the perfon k. IV. Not only those that do actually profess faith in and obedience unto Christ, but also the infants of one or both believing parents, are to be baptized m. me, Upon whom thou shalt fee the Spirit defcending, and remaining on him, the fame is he who baptizeth with the holy Ghost. Then they that gladly received his word, were baptized: and the fame day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. Acts xvi. 33. And he took them the fame hour of the night, and wafhed their stripes, and was baptized, he and all his, ftraightway. Mark vii. 4. And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups and pots, brazen yessels, and of tables. IV. I Mark xvi. 15. And he said unto them, Goye into all the world, and preach ye the gospel to every creature. v. 16. He that believeth and is baptized, shall be faved; but he that believeth not, shall be damned. Acts viii. 37. And Philip said, if thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayeft. And he answered and faid, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. v. 38. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. And Rom. iv. 11. Although it be a great sin to contemn or neglect this ordinancen, yet grace and salvation are not so inseparably annexed unto it, as that no person can be regenerated or faved without ito, or that all that are baptized are undoubtedly regenerated p. VI. The efficacy of baptifm is not tied to that moment of time wherein it is administredq; yet notwithstanding, by the right use of this ordinance, the grace promised is not only offered, but really exhibited and conferred by the holy Ghoit, to fuch (whether of age or infants) as that grace belongeth unto, acccording to the counsel of God's own will, in his appointed timer. that believe, though they be not cir. cumcifed; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also: v. 12. and the father of circumcifion to them, who are not of the circumcifion only, but also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcifed. 1 Cor. vii. 14. For the unbelieving husband is fanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the hufband: else were your children unclean: but now they are holy. Mat. xxviii. 19. Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Ghost. Mark x. 13. And they brought young children to him that he should touch them; and his difciples rebuked those that brought them. v. 14. But when Jesus saw it, he was much difpleased, and faid unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. v. 15. Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. v. 16. And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blef unto, sed them. Luke xviii. 15. And they brought unto him also infants, that he would touch them: but when his difciples saw it, they rebuked them. V. Luke vii. 30. Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. v. 8. The wind blow VII. The facrament of baptifm is but once to be administred to any persons. CHAP. XXIX. Of the Lord's Supper. UR Lord Jesus, in the night wherein he was betrayed, instituted the sacrament of his body and blood, called the Lord's Supper, to be observed in his church unto the end of the world, for the perpetual remembrance of the facrifice of himself in his death, the sealing all benefits thereof unto true believers, their spiritual nourishment and growth in him, their farther engagement in and to all duties which they owe unto him: and to be a bond and pledge of their communion with him, and with each other, as members of his mystical II. In body a. bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the found thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: fo is every one that is born of the Spirit. Gal. iii. 27. For as many of you, as have been baptized into Christ, have put on Christ. Tit. iii. 5. And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and faid, Take, eat; this is my body which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. v. 25. After the fame manner also he took the cup, when he had fupped, faying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. v. 26. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come. I Cor. x. 16. The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Chrift? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? v. 17. For we being many, are one bread and one body: for we are |
