Published by the University Press of Liverpool for the
Liverpool and District Regional Survey Assoc.

The value of such a series is chiefly for purposes of comparison. Unfortunately the maps are not on a uniform scale, and we feel that much has been lost without any real gain. A perusal of the set reveals many interesting points. We notice, for instance, the striking increase some seventy years ago within the Birkenhead area, and then at a more recent date we observe the rise in the West Kirby district. In passing, we notice that an error in the shading at Little Meols in the 1921 map rather over-emphasises this point.

Over the extended period covered by the maps we can scarcely expect that the parish populations should have been analysed, but we should like to have seen another 1921 map with the density of population treated less generally. It is one of the weaknesses of all maps treated like the present series that the population within a parish is evenly spread over. The result is often misleading. Population "precipices," where none exists, along the parish boundaries, are frequent. A much better idea could be had if the purely urban areas were filled in solid black and their populations omitted from further consideration. Within the extra-urban area the remaining population could be distributed on the basis of large-scale maps supplemented by local knowledge. We should like to have seen the Liverpool and District Regional Survey Association tackle the area under consideration in some such way. The result, we are sure, would have been well worth the trouble involved.

MY JOURNEY DOWN THE TIGRIS: A Raft-Voyage through Dead Kingdoms. By Dk. S. GUYER. Translated by JOSEPH MCCABE. Illustrated. 12s. 6d. net.

Dr. Guyer is an archæologist of repute, so that his casual remarks on monuments are scholarly, but his chief purpose in this book is to give a human account of a most interesting journey. It is rich in interest and humour. His light pen sketches unique scenes for us as he sails for weeks on a raft down the Tigris, through the wilds of Kurdistan and the plains of Mesopotamia.
