(1) Geopolitik des Pazifischen Ozeans. Von Dr. KARL HAUSHOFER, Berlin Grunewald: Kurt Vowinckel, 1924.

(2) Zur Geopolitik der Selbst-bestimmung: Südostasiens Wiederaufstieg zur Selbstbestimmung. Von Dr. KARL HAUSHofer. Das Schicksal Überseeischer Wachstumspitze. Von Dr. JOSEF MARZ. München und Leipzig: Rösl und Cie., 1923.

(1) This book is described in its sub-title as "Studies in the Inter-relations of Geography and History," but in its outlook, despite its sixteen sketch-maps, is political rather than geographical. It is intended for its author's fellow-country. men, and alike in his Introduction and in the Conclusion he urges them to read between the lines and meditate not only upon what is said, but upon the things which cannot be said at the moment. The thesis, so far as it is expressed, would appear to be that the Germans should devote more attention to the Pacific and to Pacific problems than has hitherto been the case, and that in their efforts to open up relations there they will be greatly assisted by the fact that they are the only Atlantic people unburdened by the hatred of the civilised Pacific races who have been robbed of self-determination. Just as Germany has been cut off from the open sea, and even deprived of free movement on her own streams, so will she find on the shores of the Indo-Pacific Ocean two-thirds of mankind as fellow-sufferers, for whom the breaking of the same chains means a like freedom, the re-obtaining of the greatest good of peoples as of individuals, the free development of personality according to their own laws (p. 132).

There are two appendices, one containing hints as to the use of books and maps in studying the Pacific area from the standpoint of world politics, and the other an annotated bibliography.

(2) Dr. Joseph Marz, who is one of Dr. Haushofer's students, occupies the greater part of this volume with his essay on overseas strategic points. In the first section Dr. Haushofer discusses the renewed desire for self-determination now manifest among the peoples of south-east Asia, the outlook and often the phrasing being similar to those of the book noted above. Here there are no maps nor diagrams, and the constant use of capital type, especially in the second section, together with the frequent quotations from politicians and journalists, whose statements if they happen to suit the authors' arguments are accepted without examination or qualification, tend to repel the pure geographer. Those prepared to persevere will, however, find a good deal of useful material.

Ben Kendim: A Record of Eastern Travel. By Lieut.-Col. Hon. AUBREY HERBERT, edited by D. MCCARTHY. London: Hutchinson and Co., 1924. Price 21s. net.

This book, a posthumous volume, with the necessary faults of such, consists mainly of papers on travels in the Balkans and the Near East. It is concerned mainly with the presentation of personal impressions, and explicitly it is rather political and to a less extent ethnographical than geographical. The journeys were made to satisfy an intense interest in the peoples within the recent Turkish sphere, and the author's own interest is very completely transferred to the pages he has written. Without the least insincerity one may say that he has had the knack of getting into close contact with the people whom he met, and that he gives the impression of "hitting them off" exactly in the accounts of them he has given. He has written with a very definite outlook on Eastern questions, and the fact that this outlook is not that of the press or the people makes the book very informative and suggestive. Its general sanity rescues it from the condition of the usual

writing of the partisan and the faddist. Apart from the fascination of secret meetings with Talaat Pasha and the general air of mystery which hangs about Europe east of the Vistula, and in spite of the unfinished nature of the work, the book makes most interesting reading. The title in Turkish being interpreted is, I myself; for the book is regarded as largely autobiographical.

Selected Papers on Anthropology, Travel and Exploration. By Sir RICHARD BURTON, edited by N, M. PENZER. London: Philpot, Ltd., 1924. Price 15s.

There is not much fresh to say on Sir Richard Burton at this date, but interest in him, in his character and his work, is still green, and a collection of scattered papers from his pen is of value. The originals are still not quite so inaccessible as the editor seems to think. Of the papers reprinted in the present volume, perhaps his early article on Sind and that on the trip to Mecca are of greatest interest. Extracts from the papers on Spiritualism in the East, which are also reprinted in the Life by Lady Burton, have also a curious interest. The book is well got up, contains some useful notes by the editor, and has a good index.

EDUCATIONAL.

Certificate Geographies: The Mediterranean. By O. J. R. HOWARTH, O.B.E., M.A. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1924. Price 2s. 6d.

The author's name is sufficient guarantee as to the value of this book on one of the most distinct and interesting Natural Regions, and nothing better could be put in the hands of Secondary School pupils studying this area. Far from being a mere compilation of facts to be crammed by an examinee, the dominant note throughout is the intimate relationship between the life of man in the area— including his distribution--and his physical and climatic environment. Interest is maintained from first to last of the 170 pages, while the abundant illustrations have all a geographical value. The short chapter on Geography and History should have the effect of inducing pupils to study further in that direction.

Bell's Natural Science Series: Readable Physical Geography. By J. A. O. MUIRHEAD, B.A. London: G. Bell and Sons, Ltd., 1925. Price 2s. 4d. This little book of 135 pages, primarily intended for the non-specialist teacher, is divided into three parts-Astronomical, Scenery, Climate. It is certainly readable and well illustrated, but, the space being so limited, the treatment throughout is somewhat summary. The section on Climate is the best of the three, and in it there are map-exercises. The book should make a good supplementary reader for pupils about fourteen years of age.

Should a reprint be called for, the slip on page 22 will no doubt be corrected: "the Arctic circles 674 N. and S."

The "Explorer" Geographies: Asia. By J. THOMAS, M. A. London: G. Bell and Sons, Ltd., 1924. Price 2s. 6d.

This book, companion to the already published volumes on The Americas and Africa and Australasia, shows the same method of treatment, viz. Map-readingPhysical and Climatic; Discovery by Land and Sea; Natural Regions with their Flora, Fauna, and Economic Products; and Trade and Trade Routes. Extracts from the explorers' narratives are given throughout, and their routes are marked on the included maps. Well illustrated, and possessing a unity too often wanting in such

books, this volume will be specially welcomed by senior pupils. It is certainly interesting, but none the less valuable as a medium for sound teaching.

In addition to a Glossary and Index there is a section on Place Names and also questions on each chapter.
