JAPAN.—A Map showing the Distribution of Population. Compiled by G. Ishibashi and T. Ono. 1:5,000,000. Kyoto University.

This is probably the best population map of Japan that has yet been published. It is based on the 1920 census and the densities calculated for the county units. Separate colours indicate densities of 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 350, 500, and 1000 and over per square kilometre, while densities of 1000, 5000, and 10,000 are shown within the cities. Cities are also graded according to their population. BRITISH MALAYA.-Including the Straits Settlements, Federated Malay States, and Malay States not included in the Federation. 1922. 4 sheets. Scale 8 miles to an inch. Published under the direction of the Surveyor General F.M.S. Presented by G. M. Goodwille. This map covers the whole of British Malaya. It is coloured to show Straits Settlements, Federated Malay States, and Malay States not included in the Federation. Railways are shown, also roads and paths. The weak point of the

map is the representation of relief, which is wholly inadequate. The map, however, is a valuable addition to the Society's collection.
