PREFACE.

N the great cause of Foreign Missions, all who love the Lord Jesus may be privileged,

in one way or other, to become fellow

workers, whatever their age or situation in life. The following sketches have been written with the hope of interesting youthful readers, by bringing before them, in a connected order, some of the most striking and picturesque facts of missionary history. If, from the perusal, some young hearts are led to serious inquiry as to what they can and ought to do in obedience to the Saviour's parting command,-if more sympathy, more prayers, more active efforts are thus called forth in behalf of the grandest of all human enterprises,—the object of the volume will be attained, and the writer will have cause for joy and thankfulness.

Some readers will recognize these papers as having already appeared in the Family Treasury. They were written during 1863-5, which should be kept in mind, to prevent confusion regarding some of the dates referred to.

PREFACE TO SECOND EDITION.

THE former title, "MISSIONARY EVENINGS AT HOME," has been altered in the present edition to one more descriptive of the contents; and the volume is much enlarged by the addition of chapters on South Sea Missions.

EDINBURGH, 1872.
