Mark Sect. 14. The mission, character, preaching, &c. of John. The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ the Son of God, was, as it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. Luke Now, in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Cesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Frachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abiene, Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness. And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance, for the remission of sins; As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, and make his paths straight. 6 John There was a man sent from God, whose name 7 was John. 3 Mark . 4 35 Came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, and saying, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance, for the remission of sins. Luke Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways 34 5 6 7 8 9 10 3 6 9 10 11 Luke ways shall be made smooth; and all flesh shall see the salvation of God. 18 John He was not that light, but was sent to bear witness of that light, that (or rather which) was. the true light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh, i. e. became man, and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. 12 13 14 Mat. And the same John had his raiment of camels hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and, his meat was locusts and wild honey. 15 Mark. 6 7 8 Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the region round about Jordan, and were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins. And there went out unto him all the land of Judea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins. And John was clothed with camels hair, and with a girdle of skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey. Luke Then said he to the multitude which came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Mat. But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them. O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Mat. Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repen tance. And think not to say within yourselves, Luke Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repen tance. And begin not to say within yourselves, Mat. For I say unto you, that God is able of these Mat. And now also the ax is laid unto the root of the trees: Therefore every tree which bringeth not Is hewn down, and cast into the fire. John i. 14. p.187. 17 8 13 9 Luke And now also the ax is laid unto the root of the trees: Every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit. 11 12 Is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 10 Luke And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then? Heans wereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and me that hath meat, let him do likewise. Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do? And he said unto them, Exact no nore than what is appointed you. And the soldiers ikewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we lo? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely, and be content with your wages. 13 14 15 Luke And as the people were in expectation, and all men nused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ or not; 16 John answered, saying unto them all. Mar. And preached, saying, 12 13 I indeed have baptized you with water: But he shall baptize you with the Holy I indeed baptize you with water: He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire. I indeed baptize you with water unto repen tance: But he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear away. He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire.. Mat. Whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly purge his floor, And gather his wheat into the garner: But he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire. 17 Luke Whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly 19 purge his floor, And will gather the wheat into his garner: quenchable. 18 Luke And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people. But Herod the tetrarch being reproved by him for Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done, added yet this above all, that he shut up John in pri 20 son. Luke Now, when all the people were baptized, it came to pass that Jesus also being baptized, And praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Ghost Descended in a bodily shape, like a dove upon him. Luke And a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son, in thee I am well pleased. Mar. And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Mat. And lo, a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. 1 15 John John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me, for he was before me. And of his fulness we have all received, and grace for grace. For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him. 17 18 Sect. 16.
